HMRC Government Gateway for Corporation Tax: Setup & Navigation Guide

The Government Gateway is HMRC's online portal for managing your company's tax affairs. Here's how to set it up and use it for Corporation Tax.

Step 1: Create a Government Gateway Account

  1. Go to www.gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services
  2. Click "Create sign in details"
  3. Enter your email address
  4. Set a password
  5. Note down your User ID (you'll need this every time)

Step 2: Enrol for Corporation Tax

After creating your account:

  1. Log in to Government Gateway
  2. Select "Add a tax, duty or scheme"
  3. Choose "Corporation Tax"
  4. Enter your:
    • Company registration number (8 digits from Companies House)
    • Unique Taxpayer Reference (10-digit UTR from HMRC)
  5. HMRC sends an activation code by post (takes 7-10 days)
  6. Log in again and enter the activation code

Step 3: What You Can Do

Once enrolled, your Government Gateway account lets you:

View Your Corporation Tax

  • See your current balance (how much you owe or are owed)
  • View payment history
  • Check filing deadlines
  • See HMRC's calculation after filing

Make Payments

  • Set up a Direct Debit
  • Make one-off payments
  • View payment references

Correspondence

  • Read HMRC notices and letters
  • View Notice to File (CT603)
  • Check if you have any outstanding actions

Using Third-Party Software

To file your CT600 through software like Taxpipe, you don't need to log into Government Gateway directly. The software submits to HMRC electronically using your UTR and credentials.

However, it's still useful to have Government Gateway access to:

  • Check your balance after filing
  • Verify HMRC received your return
  • View their calculation
  • Set up payment

Common Issues

Lost User ID

Click "I've forgotten my User ID" on the login page. HMRC will email it to you.

Lost Password

Click "I've forgotten my password" and follow the reset process.

Activation Code Not Arrived

Wait 10 working days. If it still hasn't arrived, call 0300 200 3410 to request a new one.

Wrong UTR

If you enrolled with the wrong UTR, you'll need to call HMRC to correct it. You can't change it online.

Security

  • Use a strong, unique password
  • Don't share your User ID or password with anyone
  • HMRC will never email you asking for your login details
  • Log out after each session
